Banz's Top 5 Video Games
Shenmue/Shenmue II [Dreamcast] |
Wander about, get a job in a warehouse and feed the local stray cat. Against the odds this game is not rubbish.
The revenge story is hardly original but getting to control the lead character, especially in the fight scenes is not to be missed. |
Bombjack [Spectrum] |
A simple game with a fantastic control system that I spent a fair chunk of the late 80s playing.
My mate Ted and I had a titanic tussle to see who could hit the million first.
I don't remember who won... |
Point Blank 2 [PSone] |
We had the arcade version of this in our student union and it attracted a select band of devotees.
The Playstation version is just as good when used with the light gun and is perfect for a 30 minute pre-(or post) pub blast. |
Elite [Spectrum] |
The best game ever (tm) and that I've not seen equalled for long-term playability.
The combination of trading, fighting and upgrading your ship made this the game to own on any of the 8-bit machines. |
Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2002 [PS2] |
I love playing golf and may never get to break 50 in real life. Not for 18 holes anyway.
The control system is brilliantly realised, so much so that I have a slice in this as well.
The best golf game I've ever played, and I've played a few. |

Shenmue/Shenmue II [Dreamcast] |
Will Ryo Hazuki ever find Lan Di - the man who murdered his father?
As Shenmue II ends on a cliffhanger and Shenmue III not yet in production, we may not know for some time, but in the meantime we have two of the best realised games I've ever played to while away the hours. |
The Sims [PS2] |
As you can probably tell, I'm a big fan of Sim games, so why not include the original?
Taking your charcter, mine Oswaldo Giraldo Jnr, (something for the Boro fans there) from sharing a house with his moody mother, to being an astronaut and retiring to his private island, I love the control and humour contained in the game.
If only life was so simple.... |
Crash Team Racing [PSone]
|
I'm not a huge fan of racing games, but there's something special about Crash Team Racing.
Great weapons, tricky courses and always beating Banz make this a certainty in my Top 5.
Bring on Crash Nitro Racing. |
Age Of Empires 2: The Age of Kings [PC] |
Build your civilisation from scratch, develop a fearsome army and then attack your neighbours.
Who said that power is an aphrodisiac? |
SimCity 4 [PC] |
My meglomaniac ways know no bounds, and Sim City gives me the opportunity to take them to an extreme.
I just have to remember no to build a 40,000 seater stadium in a city that has only 5,000 people.
