Take Me with You
My most recently completed book. Very enjoyable twist on your usual travel book. Brad Newsham has an interesting perspective as he travels through several countries over the course of 100 days as he meets people and tries to decide which one to take home - an opportunity that they would otherwise never have.
Currently enjoying Brad's first book All the Right Places.
Peter Moore
I read No Shitting in the Toilet before I went travelling in Brisbane. It was my inspiration whilst I was grinding out 13 hour days making coffee and typing up proposals for a train link between Brisbane City and the Airport. Only downside is a jibe at sunny Brisvegas.... but you can't have everything
For Love and a Beetle [Ivan Hodge and Petronella McGovern]
Well written story about a couple who travelled from India to England in their VW Beetle twice, the second time 30 years after the first trip in 1961.
Bill Bryson
We've been fans of Bill Bryson's for a long time. He was one of Vic's inspirations for leaving Australia in the first place after being particularly inspired by his description of the Northern Lights (which she still hasn't got around to seeing) in Neither Here Nor There: Travels in Europe.
Tony Hawks
Tony Hawks' adventures mainly take the form of crazy bets. The first was to travel around Ireland with a Fridge, the second to beat the Moldovan football team at tennis and the third, to have a second top ten hit anywhere in the world (made after he was branded a one hit wonder by friends since he hadn't had a number one since the immortal "Stutter Rap"). Also worth checking out is his web page where mainly teenagers mistake him for the great skateboarder, Tony Hawk - CLICK!
Tim Moore
Again, Tim's travel writing revolves around doing strange things as he sees the world. Besides cycling the route of the Tour De France, he has researched and gone to all the places on the Monopoly Board in London and re-created the route of the first person to do the Grand Tour of Europe.
Enduring Cuba [Zoe Bran]
In Enduring Cuba, Zoe Bran perfectly captures the mixed emotions we had when visiting Cuba. A very straightforward account of a complicated country. Vic has just finished reading After Yugoslavia about Zoe's journey around the former-Yugoslavia - 20 years after her first and after the break-up of what was then Yugoslavia.
Sean and David's Long Drive [Sean Condon]
Funny account of two friends leaving Melbourne and driving out to discover their homeland of Australia.
Breaking Ranks: Turbulent Times in the Promised Land [Ben Black]
Fascinating account of a Scottish Jew returning to Israel to make it his home. Whilst there his ideals conflict with what he see daily. His hand is forced when he is called up to the army and must then make a choice regarding his future.
Travels on My Elephant [Mark Shand]
A really touching account of the author's journey through India with his elephant, Tara. The story is not only about his journey, but also his relationship with the elephant, her keepers and the people they meet along the way.
