How we decided to do the trip
We have both been keen travellers since we originally got together back in 1998. One day, we will try to get some travelogues on the web, but we suspect that that will have to wait until we're settled back in Australia and the only travelling we do is walking to the bookcase to get the photo albums out. We have a shortlist of where we've been in our Previous Travels.
We both gained inspiration for the trip in August 2002 when we were on holiday in Poland. We were there as our friends Pino and Sandra were celebrating their wedding and we couldn't miss out the opportunity to attend. We had a fantastic time at the wedding and loved the ceremony and celebrations that we had there. After the wedding we headed to Poland's lake district at Ruciane Nida for some R&R. Whilst there we hired bikes for a day and although they had no brakes and some of the tracks were just loose sand, we had a great time riding them around the area. That night over dinner we both seperately and spontaneously decided that when we did return to Australia to live we should do it overland (something we'd wanted to do since reading Peter Moore's book "The Long Way Home" about his attempt to travel from London to Sydney without flying) and on bike. Simple enough.... Well the organising part didn't really faze us, it's more the fitness issues that worry us, but as we read more and more we realised that you get fitter as you go along - right?
Over the next few pages you will see some sites and books that we have read that have inspired us along the way. Enjoy.
